This year, Animal Humane (which is the country's first national humane organization, founded in 1877) is challenging people to take the "Kindness Pledge" which states:
"I believe in kindness and compassion for all animals, and that all animals are entitled to humane treatment. I will be kind to animals all year round by:
- Buying humanely raised products - you can help better the lives of over 10 billion farm animals by seeking out humanely raised foods with the American Humane Certified™ seal
- Protecting Earth's animals - help the many endangered and disappearing species of the world by visiting only Humane Certified™ zoos, aquariums, and conservation centers
- Protecting animal actors - by looking for the the "No Animals Were Harmed®" end-credit
- Adopting from an animal shelter - help the 6-8 million animals abandoned each year by adopting
The Kindness Pledge website even has downloadable resources for children preschool-aged to grade 5.
Says Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane:
The need for compassion has never been greater. I hope every American will join us in celebrating ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ and making a difference for all the creatures of the Earth – not just during these several days, but all year round.
